UNDERDOGS. BAD BEATS. BIG UPSETS.
Somewhere in the Northeast. 1995.
You ever open your refrigerator and find nothing but a half-empty carton of takeout rice, a couple packets of soy sauce, and a slice of pizza that tastes more like the refrigerator than pizza?
You ever meet a girl you really wanna get to know?
Beautiful smile. Funny. Smart. The kind of girl who makes you forget about the score for five whole minutes.
But you know you’re in a bad way.
And maybe she knows it, too.
You’d love to take her someplace nice. Buy her dinner. Maybe catch a movie.
Instead, you’re wondering whether the twenty bucks in your pocket has to last until Thursday.
And whether the guys you’ve been avoiding are gonna show up before then.
You ever feel like you’re one good break away from getting your life together… but every break you catch seems to break something else?
Yeah.
Welcome to my world, pal.
THE APARTMENT
I got an air mattress.
Not a bed. An air mattress.
And the damn thing’s got a slow leak.
Every morning I wake up three inches closer to the floor.
AT THIS RATE, I’LL BE SLEEPING IN THE BASEMENT BY CHRISTMAS.
I’ve got a Sega Genesis.
No television.
Just a perfectly good gaming system sitting on the floor, waiting for me to become financially stable enough to see what the hell I’m playing.
I’ve got a kitchen table with one good chair and a stack of losing betting slips that could probably qualify as insulation.
And somehow, every Monday, I convince myself this is the week everything turns around.
THE BAR
There’s this little joint around the corner.
The kind of place where the coffee tastes like motor oil, the jukebox hasn’t worked since they started laying the pavement outside, and nobody asks too many questions.
My buddy Wrong-Way Willie hangs out there.
Trip Dub, we call him.
He’s got a remarkable talent for picking the wrong side of a game and explaining why he was right anyway.
Anyway, I come bursting through the door one afternoon.
“TRIP DUB! WHAT’S THE SCORE?!”
He looks up from his newspaper.
“Zero-zero.”
“WHO’S WINNING?!”
He stares at me.
“Nobody. The game started thirty seconds ago.”
“Yeah, but who’s looking better?”
“THEY HAVEN’T EVEN TOUCHED THE BALL!”
“Well, who’s got the edge? What’s the feel? Who’s squeezing who?!”
Trip Dub folds his newspaper.
“Pal, you need a hobby.”
“THIS IS MY HOBBY!”
He shakes his head.
And I order a coffee I probably shouldn’t be spending money on.
THE DREAM
You know what I dream about?
Not a mansion.
Not a yacht.
Not some ridiculous sports car with doors that open like a pair of scissors.
I dream about having so much energy that I could stay up all night and still feel like a million bucks.
Because right now?
Some nights I barely sleep.
Too much stress. Too many things running through my head. Too many problems waiting for me when the sun comes up.
But I imagine a different kind of night.
One where I can run through those empty streets for miles.
No exhaustion.
No debts.
No collectors.
No wondering who’s waiting around the corner.
Just me, the pavement, and the feeling that I could keep going forever.
And then the sun starts coming up.
The streets begin waking up.
The coffee shops start opening.
And somehow, I already know…
TODAY’S GONNA BE A GOOD DAY.
Maybe there’s that girl waiting for me at a little coffee shop around the corner.
Or maybe she’s just getting off work, and I can meet her outside and walk her home.
Maybe there’s actual food in the refrigerator.
Maybe the air mattress finally gets replaced by something with a frame.
And maybe, just maybe, I’ve got a few winning tickets tucked away.
NOT BECAUSE I NEED THE MONEY TO SURVIVE.
Because I finally got smart enough to enjoy the game without letting the game run my life.
And I swear to myself, if I ever get there…
I AIN’T NEVER GOING BACK IN THAT HOLE AGAIN.
Am I gonna stop gambling?
…
What am I, a monk?
OF COURSE NOT!
But there’s a difference between enjoying the action and letting the action enjoy YOU.
And I’ve spent enough years on the wrong side of that arrangement.
SO WHAT’S MONEY-FIGHT BALLERS?
It’s my attempt to figure this whole racket out.
Football. Basketball. Baseball. Hockey. Boxing.
Moneylines. Point spreads. Underdogs. Upsets.
The good bets. The terrible bets. The ones that looked brilliant until the final thirty seconds.
We’re gonna study the games, question some random guy at the bar who sounds way too confident, and occasionally investigate a suspicious tip from a friend who swears his cousin knows somebody on the inside.
We’re gonna look for overlooked opportunities and keep track of our results.
WINNERS AND LOSERS.
No disappearing picks.
No pretending we knew something after the game ended.
No guaranteed locks from some loudmouth who couldn’t pick a winner if both teams were playing against themselves.
And along the way?
We’re gonna tell some stories.
Some true. Some exaggerated. Some neighborhood legends that probably shouldn’t be repeated in front of a judge.
But the actual games and betting results?
THOSE STAY HONEST.
Because I’ve learned something after all these years:
PICKING THE BEST TEAM AND FINDING THE BEST BET AREN’T ALWAYS THE SAME THING.
And maybe it’s time I started acting like I know the difference.
ONE MORE THING…
I got a theory about where this whole gambling business is headed.
βOne day, every schmuck in America is gonna have a sportsbook in his pocket. No bookie, no phone call, no walking down the street. Just push a button, lose your paycheck, and get an advertisement telling you how much fun you’re having!β
You think I’m crazy?
Fine.
Get in line.
But remember something.
THE HOUSE ALWAYS LOOKS BETTER THAN THE GUY WALKING OUT OF IT.
And I’m getting tired of being that guy.
So pull up a chair.
Grab a newspaper.
Tell Trip Dub I sent ya.
And whatever you do…
DON’T BET THE RENT MONEY.
Trust me.
I’ve already tried that strategy.
WELCOME TO MONEY-FIGHT BALLERS.
